Enfield double derby preview

Thursday June 18th 2009

A juicy double header against local championship rivals Enfield promises to provide a treat for local cricket fans this weekend. On Saturday the clubs meet at Thorneyholme Road in the replayed fixture from May 17th. Andy Greenwood replaces Paul Carroll, who is absent due to business comittments, in the Accrington side. Joe Wrigley comes into the Enfield side in place of Mas Ahmed. Somerset's Steffan Jones stands in as sub professional. On Sunday at Dill Hall Lane Mas Ahmed and Mark Burns come into a twelve man squad, which includes professional Gary Brent, with Kurt Robinson dropping down into the seconds whilst Accrington are unchanged.

Last season the two teams provided three truly classic encounters, all of which went Accrington's way.

Accrington skipper David Ormerod said: "Enfield are a fine team and pushed us close last year in both league and cup games. I feel that they will be stronger still this time around with a good blend of youth and experience in their batting line up. They look to have recruited well professionally with Steffan Jones coming into the side on Saturday and we expect him to do the bulk of the bowling from one end, much in the same way as Gary Brent will do on Sunday. Gary Brent is a model professional who has gained much admiration from players around the League (myself included) not only for his hard cricket on the field but also for his friendliness and affability off it. We go into this weekend in buoyant mood after a good win against a strong Burnley side last Sunday. It has been a great team effort so far this season with every player contributing at some stage. It is a fine testament to all the amateurs hard work that we are where we are in the League without a major contribution from Roy, although I am sure, as he is himself, that this will soon be put right. The League is building up to be a close run thing this season and i expect Enfield could still be in the mix come September."
