League award for Barney Saturday October 19th 2002 Adam
Barnes has become only the second player in club history to win the Lancashire
Evening Telegraph Wicketkeeping Tankard. Adam has won the tankard for
taking five catches in the 4 run win at Enfield on August 25th. Adam
is the only wicketkeeper to claim five catches in a league match in the
2002 season. The tankard is now awarded for the best individual performance
rather than for the most victims as it was when Billy Rawstron won a tankard
in 1989 when he broke the club wicketkeeping record. The tankard has been
awarded every season since 1968. It is real 'rags to riches' story because Adam began the season as second choice wicketkeeper in the seconds behind Robert Airey, but he was called into the first team for the second match of the season to keep wicket in place of Matt Wilson. Since
then, Adam has made the position his own, putting behind him the disappointments
of missing out on two cup final appearances earlier in his career with
the seconds in 2000 and the A Team three years earlier. |
