Rishton v Accrington
A record breaking day at Rishton saw Accrington beat their local rivals for a sixteenth successive league match. Accrington captain Graeme Sneddon was the chief record breaker in hitting the highest score by an Accrington amateur since the great Billy Ormerod hit an unbeaten 169 against Haslingden in 1905. The left hander, without a half century for two years, waltzed past his previous best of 69 in smashing eighteen fours and eight sixes, passing 50 in 44 balls, his hundred in 62 balls, before falling for a brilliant 152 from just 89 balls. Losing Matt Wilson (4) at 23 and last weeks record breaker Jacob Clarke (0) at 32, Sneddon added 190 with his professional Ockert Erasmus for the 3rd wicket before being bowled by Bradley Boddie at 222. His innings was the highest by an amateur in the league this season. Erasmus then took over putting on 76 with Ali Hasham (37) reaching his century off 113 balls, finally falling for a career best 111 which included thirteen fours and two sixes, passing 500 runs for the season. Accrington's score of 316-5 was the club's third highest ever score. Rishton professional Kelly Smuts took 3-81 from 17 overs, Garth Wyse 1-66 from 10 and Boddie 1-42 from 7. Matt Lambert's 6 overs cost 62, Danny Briggs went for 34 in 5 overs and Richard Rostron 27 in 5. Smuts made an unbeaten 51 from 80 balls with six fours when Rishton's innings was terminated by the rain at 101-5. Boddie made 11 and Ben Bridson 16 with David Ormerod taking 2-21 in Accrington's fifth successive win in all competitions. Jimmy Hayhurst spoke for his team-mates in praising the skippers knock "It was a super knock, he played some fantastic shots, everything seemed to be coming out of the middle of the bat and was great to watch. All the lads are made up for him. He's one guy who has come in for criticism over the years but he just showed them what he's capable of. He's worked hard, kept his head down and got on with it! His heart and soul is in the club and he is becoming a very good captain." Ian Wilson: "Where it came from I have absolutely no idea, but it was a tremendous innings of clean hitting and timing. Eight sixes and eighteen fours give you a flavour of the knock, but it was much more than a "slogathon", there were a number of exquisite cover drives and straight drives that would have graced any innings on any cricket ground anywhere. The whole club is delighted for Graeme who is Accrington through and through, we all knew he had the ability and that one day he would show people how good a cricketer he is. Well today that day arrived." |
