Lancashire League champions Accrington began the defence of their crown with a 6 wicket win over new look Ramsbottom at Thorneyholme Road. Simon Hanson (3-12), Jimmy Hayhurst (3-26) and David Ormerod (2-26) combined to reduce Ramsbottom to 55-9 but a last wicket stand of 39 between Matt Sutton (24 not out) and Michael Haworth (15) held the champions up. Jamie Pilling (17) was the only other man in double figures after Tom Parton was unluckily run out backing up and professional Daryn Smit fell to Hayhurst without scoring. Hanson (20), professional Ockert Erasmus (27 not out), skipper Stuart Crabtree (15) and Sam Excell (17 not out) then saw Accrington home with few alarms inspite of a fine 17 over spell by Jon Fielding (2-32).
