Holland Cup holders Accrington got off to a winning start with a 39 run win over East Lancs in a 26 overs a-side game at Thorneyholme Road. Openers Simon Hanson (33, including five boundaries) and Stuart Crabtree (16) put on a rapid 53 before East Lancs professional Ockert Erasmus removed them both. The South African went on to claim 6-38 as he bowled right through with only Graham Lloyd (22) and Andrew Greenwood (10) making double figures as Accrington closed on 119-9. Paul Kelly also picked up 3-27. Acting skipper David Ormerod made an early breakthrough by removing David Pearson (1). The East Lancs veteran had earlier overtaken Ray Kelly's club record for most wicketkeeping victims (634 in league and cup) when he stumped Bryn Hargreaves. Kelly (12) and John Turner (6) took the score to 21 when Accrington professional Ashar Zaidi trapped the latter in front. He had his opposite number Erasmus snapped up by Matt Wilson next ball and when Ormerod dismissed Kelly and Minaj Bhada four wickets had fallen for the addition of just 1 run. It was uphill from there on with the only note worthy stand of the innings being the 7th wicket one between Adam Chester, who clubbed three fours and a six in making a career best 33, and Ben Westhead, who made 15 in a stand of 33. The return of Ormerod for Jake Clarke signalled another collapse with Zaidi removing Westhead and Ormerod adding Adam Chester and Michael Timmis to his long list of scalps, taking 5-26. Zaidi finished with 4-34 as Accrington just failed to pick up maximum points with the visitors holding on at 80-9.
