Accrington's bid for a third Lancashire League title in four seasons received a boost when they completed the double over Todmorden with a 38 run win at Centre Vale. In a match played against the backdrop of the Todstock Music Festival in Centre Vale Park, the league's leading run scorer Ashar Zaidi returned to form to top score with an unbeaten 87 from 59 balls with six sixes and six fours, passing 800 runs for the season in Accrington's 185-2. The Pakistani put on 156 with Stuart Crabtree in an unbroken 3rd wicket stand after professional Qaiser Abbas had dismissed Graeme Sneddon (9) and Graham Lloyd (5). Crabtree hit four fours and two sixes from 94 balls. The match started at 15.25 after the heavy rain of Saturday morning and began as a 30 overs aside game but after just 1 over had been bowled the rain returned to trim another 2 overs off the innings. Skipper Jimmy Hayhurst sent back both Todmorden openers with Ben Sutcliffe caught by Lloyd at slip for 9 and Simon Newbitt caught by David Ormerod for 12 at 28. Abbas and Nick Barker looked to have turned the tide with a 3rd wicket stand of 77. Abbas survived a chance on 5 and he went on to make 41 with three fours and two sixes before being well held by Marley Ali off Zaidi. Barker made 42 with three fours and two sixes but after this pair had gone Accrington got back on top and restricted Todmorden to 147-6. Stevie Barker was unbeaten on 16 with Hayhurst (2-51), Ormerod (2-77) and Zaidi (2-15) taking a couple of wickets apiece for Accrington who stay in third place but close the gap on Todmorden to 3 points after 18 matches.
