Accrington won the Holland Cup for the first time since 1989 after beating Burnley by 3 wickets at Thorneyholme Road. Graham Lloyd played his ninth match winning innings of the season to steer Accrington home after his side had again been in trouble at 54-5. After losing skipper Steve Brunt to Bryn Hargreaves without scoring, Qasim Ali and Michael Kelly put on 104 for the 2nd wicket in double quick time. The visitors had 70 on the board after only 10 overs having hit David Ormerod out of the attack by smashing 29 off the veteran's 4 overs. Sub professional Anwar Ul Haq picked up Ali who made 31 from 43 balls and then Kelly who hit seven fours and a six from 73 balls in making 58. Skipper Jimmy Hayhurst then got to work on the middle and lower order picking up 4-53 with Ul Haq taking 5-58 as Burnley subsided from 120-3 to 158 all out. James Capstick and Brunt made life difficult for Accrington's brittle early order. Capstick trapped Simon Hanson without scoring, Stuart Crabtree for 7, Andy Greenwood for 19 and Mitch Taylor for 2. When Ul Haq holed out to Gus Whitehead at long off for 18, half of the side were out for 54 as Accrington chased a revised target of 140 from 42 overs after 8 overs were lost to rain. Graeme Sneddon joined Lloyd and this pair turned the match Accrington's way with a 6th wicket stand of 73. Sneddon hit five fours in making 35 from 38 balls in one of his best and most important innings for the club. Lloyd was given a testing time by Brunt who kept the former Lancashire man quiet for long spells until the veteran launched two sixes to ease the pressure and force the skipper to retire from the firing line. Imad Wasim removed Sneddon and Matt Wilson with successive balls to reach 50 wickets for the season, but young Hargreaves kept his nerve to see Accrington home with eight balls to spare. Lloyd hit two fours and two sixes in making an unbeaten 38 from 58 balls and he passed 600 runs for the season during his innings.
