Accrington faced total humiliation at Enfield going down to a 193 run defeat to finally extinguish any last lingering hopes of a third successive league title. The home side piled up 232-3 on the hottest day of the year. Jimmy Hayhurst removed the unorthodox Aneeq Hussain (3) at 17 and Simon Hanson picked up the wily Mas Ahmed at 90 after the former Accrington skipper had hit 40. Sub professional Gary Brent then joined forces with stand-in skipper Liam Jackson to add 98 for the 3rd wicket. Brent made 65 from 106 balls with four fours and a six before falling to Paul Carroll. Jackson went on to hit an unbeaten 78 from 84 balls with five fours and five sixes. Another former Accrington man, Zed Afzal was also unbeaten on 18 at the close. Jackson then waded into the Accrington batsmen having Hanson taken behind by Joe Wrigley before a run had been scored. Graeme Sneddon followed in the same manner and professional Will Driver's purple patch ended when his opposite number Brent dismissed him for just 4. Jackson trapped Matt Wilson in front for 2 and then Brent did likewise to Graham Lloyd who was the only man to make double figures with 10. Matt Schofield was brilliantly caught by Brent running backwards off a top edge off the rampant Jackson for 4. Wrigley completed a fine display behind the stumps by snapping up Matt Taylor and Hayhurst off Jackson and Brent respectively. Brent finally ended the agony for Stuart Crabtree who hung around for half an hour for his 3 runs and Jackson ended off a fine all round day by snapping up his opposite number David Ormerod off Hassan Fazal to end the Accrington effort at 39. Jackson finished with 5-12 and Brent 4-17. Accrington's 193 run defeat was the club's heaviest ever.
