Jimmy Hayhurst got a warm reception on his return to Thorneyholme Road

It was double decker bus time at Thorneyholme Road where Accrington, after 16 straight defeats celebrated a second successive win this time over defending champions Haslingden. Steve Dearden ripped out Accrington's top three sending back Mohsin Ahmed (9) Tama Canning (0) and Zahir Afzal (15) and Pasan Wanasinghe trapped Stuart Crabtree for 11 to leave the home side on 54-4. Once again the Wilson brothers led the fightback with skipper Matt returning to the fray to make an unbeaten 27 after having to retire hurt with a back injury. Adam Wilson made a career best 46, Graeme Sneddon 20, Andy Greenwood 20 and Mick Horsfield 11 to take the home side to 180. Dearden took 6-51 and Wanasinghe 3-45 for Haslingden. Openers John Simpson (18) and Graham Knowles got Haslingden off to a sound start, putting on 40 before Simpson was dismissed by Afzal, becoming the first of four caught and bowleds in the innings. Afzal then removed Stuart Catterall (18) and Wanasinghe (4) with Canning dismissing Dearden (5) and skipper Paul Blackledge (5). Canning struck again to dismiss Knowles for 55 to put the match within his sides grasp. A superb running catch by Crabtree at long on accounted for Andrew Smith and Lewis McIntosh soon followed to give Afzal his fifth wicket. Mike Ingham became Afzal's next victim but it was Canning who finished Haslingden off when he had Accrington old boy Jimmy Hayhurst caught behind by Adam Wilson to give the home side a 49 run win. Afzal finished with 6-68 and Canning 4-51 as Accrington won at home for the first time since 18th July last year.
