Accrington
(12pts) beat Rawtenstall (0pts) by 6 wickets |
Accrington
finally won their third match of the season after coming so close at
Todmorden yesterday. Andre Seymore's men beat Rawtenstall by 6 wickets
at Thorneyholme Road. Andrew Payne (51) hit his sixth half century of
the season and passed 500 league runs in the process before becoming
Len Dewhurst's 50th league victim. Richard Wood continued his good recent
form with 56 and skipper Peter Hanson hit 25 with Steve Juliff taking
4-52 for Accrington as the visitors were bowled out for 168. Spurred
on by taking bowling bonus points for the first time since the opening
game of the season, Accrington made a determined but slow start. Adam
Barnes made 11 as Keith Roscoe and John Dawson kept things tight but
when Seymore arrived at the crease, the scoring rate increased significantly.
The professional put on 110 for the 2nd wicket with Mohsin Ahmed before
losing his wicket for 64 with 36 runs still needed. It was left to Mohsin
to see Accrington home as the young opener hit 10 boundaries in a superb
unbeaten 70. Matt Wilson hit the winning runs off Roscoe with his favourite
reverse sweep. The veteran Rawtenstall spinner took 3-40 but the visitors
were handicapped by professional Mike Smith carrying a knee injury that
restricted him to just one over of gentle off spin that went for 14
runs.
