New league leaders Rishton moved 7 points clear at the top of the table after thrashing local rivals Accrington by 10 wickets at Blackburn Road. Sub professional Phil Simmons took 7-42 to bowl Accrington out for 119. Openers Billy Rawstron and Russell Edmonds put on 43 before Rawstron was caught by Russell Whalley off Robbie Walsh for 25. Leg spinner Stuart Roberts had Edmonds caught by Mark Greenhalgh for 16, four runs later. After a wicketless first spell of 10 overs, Simmons returned to the attack to clean bowl skipper Mark Aspin (10) at 64. Sub professional Robert Haynes, standing n for the injured Colin Miller, was next to go, caught behind by Andy Bartley off Simmons at 75 for 15. Tofeeq Khan (5) was trapped in front by Simmons 1 run later as half the side were out for 76. Brian Holmes (22) and Martin Whittle (12) took the score to 109 before Holmes fell to Greenhalgh. One run later, Simmons trapped Wayne Roberts in front without scoring. Simmons polished off the innings by cleaning up Whittle, Damian Clarke (0) and Steve Birtwistle (0) to bowl Accrington out in the 41st over. Tariq Hussain was unbeaten on 4. Accrington tried five bowlers, but openers Craig Smith and John Wharton knocked off the runs in the 29th over. Smith hit eleven fours and a six in his unbeaten 73 and Wharton hit four fours in his unbeaten 43. The defeat was Accrington's sixth in a row and sent the club to the bottom of the table after Enfield ended a losing streak of nine matches by beating East Lancs. Mark Aspin resigned as captain and left the club never to play for Accrington again in the aftermath of the defeat.
