Accrington went down to a third successive defeat this time by 129 runs at the hands of third placed title chasing local rivals Rishton at Thorneyholme Road. Sub professional Phil Simmons hit a superb century to help Rishton post 217-7 and then Mark Greenhalgh took 6-43 to help bowl his former club out for 88. Accrington professional Colin Miller passed 50 wickets for the season in taking 3-45 from 19 overs. the Australian sent back the free scoring Craig Smith without scoring with his fourth ball of the match. Miller then cleaned up the other opener John Wharton (21) at 65. Damian Clarke had skipper Russell Davies (14) stumped by Russell Edmonds at 104. Home skipper Mark Aspin (3-98) sent back Russell Whalley (15), Greenhalgh (2) and finally Simmons but only after the West Indian had hit fifteen fours and three sixes in making 110. Miller returned to make Ian Procter (23) his 50th wicket of the season. Wicketkeeper Andy Bartley (19 not out) and Neil Wells (6 not out) then guided Rishton to 217-7. Greenhalgh struck twice in his fourth over to send back opener Martin Whittle (1) and Edmonds (0) in successive balls with Simmons removing Aspin (1), Miller (0) and the other opener Billy Rawstron (12) to have Accrington in dire straits on 20-5. Tofeeq Khan and Mark Stevenson added 29 for the 6th wicket when Stevenson fell to Greenhalgh for a 22 ball duck. Stefan Heins (1) was caught by Greenhalgh off leg spinner Stuart Roberts with Greenhalgh himself sending back Tariq Hussain (0) and Khan, who made a career best 36 before falling at 78. Clarke (9) was bowled by Whalley to end the innings at 88 in the 38th over with Azad Akram unbeaten on 2. Accrington stay in next to bottom spot.
