Nelson v Accrington
Defending champions Nelson cruised to a 146 run home win over bottom club Accrington who went down to a seventh successive defeat. The one bright spot for Accrington was a hat-trick for Len Dewhurst who picked up a career best 5-93 from 19 overs in Nelson's huge total of 240-8. After sub professional Ian Wrigglesworth had removed opener Duncan Spencer (16) t 40, professional Joe Scuderi and Colin Heap put on 64 before opener Heap fell to Dewhurst for 46. Scuderi and Paul Garaghty put on another 103, their ninth century stand together before the amateur was run out for 34. Scuderi completed his fifteenth league century, hitting thirteen fours and two sixes before being caught on the boundary by Wrigglesworth off Dewhurst for 110 with 207 on the board. Dewhurst also dismissed Richard Madden (8) and Trevor Kegg (5) off the first two balls of his next over to complete his hat-trick. His final wicket was skipper Michael Bradley (3) at 234. Colin Pemberton (3) was run out at 237 with Jason Warwick (2 not out) and Jason Smith (1 not out) unbeaten when the innings closed on 240-8. Accrington's reply got off to the worse possible start when Russell Edmonds was run out in the first over without facing a ball in an innings that would be twice interrupted by rain. Barratt (3) fell to Kegg at 28 with opener Billy Rawstron next to go to Scuderi after hitting 31 of the first 40 runs scored. Tofeeq Khan was run out for 7 at 53 with Scuderi picking up Martin Whittle (5) at 59, skipper Brian Holmes (7) at 67 and Wayne Roberts (0) at 72. Scuderi finished with 6-27 to add to his century. Wrigglesworth was unbeaten on 25. Accrington remained in bottom place whilst Nelson moved up to third in the table.
