Accrington fell to a 56 run defeat to East Lancs at Alexandra Meadows on the opening day of the season. Home professional Alan Dawson hit 111, including nine fours and five sixes, in East Lancs 213-5 after Azad Akram had removed Phil Bolton (1) at 4 and new Accrington professional Colin Miller had picked up Dave Pearson (12) at 16. Skipper Mark Lomas hit 62, including three fours and a six, before falling to Miller, adding 168 for the 3rd wicket with Dawson. Akram also picked up Phil Mooney without scoring, caught by skipper Mark Aspin, who split the webbing on his hand in the process, resulting in a trip to the local hospital for stitches. Nas Iqbal trapped Mark Stevenson (3) in front at 9 and then bowled Martin Whittle (13) at 46. Ian Haworth (3-27) struck to remove Russell Edmonds (20), Miller (24) and Aspin (0) to leave Accrington struggling on 69-5. Paul Barratt made a fighting half century, including seven boundaries. Mooney also picked up Scott Greaves (0) and Wayne Roberts (1) with Jonathan Prince removing Brian Holmes (15) on his league debut. Akram was unbeaten on 14 after adding 32 for the 10th wicket with Barratt who fell to Dawson for exactly 50 when the innings ended at 157.
