Accrington v Church
Church completed the double over local rivals Accrington with a 23 run win at Thorneyholme Road. Sub professional David Callaghan hit an unbeaten 95, including nine fours and a six, in Church's 196-2. Openers Alec Holt and Trevor Hatch put on 39 before Hatch fell to Martin Whittle for 17. Holt (30) was caught behind by Russell Edmonds off professional Colin Miller at 74 but Callaghan and Neil Perry (43 not out) put on an unbroken stand of 122 to set a stiff target for Accrington to chase. Accrington began slowly, losing Arif Hussain (12) to Jon Longden at 22. At the halfway point, Accrington were 60-1. Edmonds was run out for 18 without addition in the next over to bring Miller to the crease. Whittle and Miller put on 30 before the amateur fell to Ken Fergusson for 34. Miller departed at 124 for 45 to his opposite number Callaghan (3-47), who also picked up Tofeeq Khan (8) and Mark Demaine (9). Skipper Brian Holmes (1) fell to Longden at 141 with Stefan Heins (1) being run out at the same score. Azad Akram (23 not out) Mark Stevenson and (8 not out) put 32 for the 9th wicket but Accrington fell short on 173-8 when the overs ran out.
