Haslingden v Accrington
Accrington began the season with a 4 wicket defeat to defending champions Haslingden at Bentgate. Opener Bob Collins top scored with 59, including seven fours, against his former club in Accrington's 151-8. Collins lost skipper Nick Marsh (2) at 16 and new professional Sherwin Campbell (4) at 22, both men falling to Haslingden professional Brad McNamara (3-46). Paul Barratt (34) added 89 with Collins for the 3rd wicket but both men fell at 111 with Barry Knowles having Collins caught by skipper Bob Grimshaw and Barratt falling to McNamara. Knowles also picked up Martin Whittle (1), Mark Demaine (0) and wicketkeeper Russell Edmonds (0) to take a hat-trick as five wickets fell for the addition of just one run. Mark Aspin hit an unbeaten 29, adding 24 for the 8th wicket with Neil Holmes (7) to help his team finish on 151-8. Barry Knowles took a career best 4-44. Holmes (2-28) removed openers Mike Ingham (4) and Patrick Lord (0) with Aspin sending back Graham Knowles (0) to have Haslingden in trouble at 7-3. Stuart Taylor (15) joined McNamara to add 66 for the 4th wicket before falling to Campbell. Justin Greenwood bowled Mark Griffin (5) at 83 but McNamara passed his half century, hitting seven fours before being run out for 61. Grimshaw (32 not out) and Andrew Sidley (15 not out) put on an unbroken 35 to take Haslingden to victory in the 44th over.
