Accrington went down to a 50 run defeat by bottom club Rawtenstall at Thorneyholme Road. Chasing the visitors 175-8, Accrington struggled to 125-8 against tight bowling by Keith Roscoe (4-31) and visiting professional Colin Miller (3-35 from 16 overs). Opener John Kershaw was first to go when he was cleaned up by Mark Greenhalgh for 9 with the score on 15. The record breaking Peter Wood and Glenn Barlow put on 98 for the 2nd wicket before Wood was caught by Neil Holmes off professional Dipak Patel for 52, including five fours and a six. Barlow was bowled by left armer Martin Whittle for 42 at 119. Eight runs later Whittle (4-16) trapped Brian Payne in front without scoring. Whittle claimed the scalp of Miller (14) at 146 and Patel (3-66) clean bowled skipper Bob Holmes (0) without addition. Whittle struck again to remove Brett Storey (10) at 164 and two runs later Patel sent back Brian Terry for 19. Tariq Saddique (8 not out) and wicketkeeper Peter Barnes (3 not out) were still at the crease when the innings closed after 46 overs. Miller had opener Neil Barnes caught by Payne for 5 at 19. Promoted to open the innings, Paul Barratt (17) was bowled by Saddique at 29. Miller then picked up the vital wicket of his opposite number Patel who was caught behind by Barnes for 1 at 30. Miller then had Whittle caught by Kershaw for 8 with the score on 47. Roscoe joined the attack and struck in his first over by bowling Morgan Whipp for 11. Roscoe then sent back Mark Demaine (0), Neil Holmes (9) and Mick Wilson (1) to reduce Accrington to 96-8. Greenhalgh and Steve Juliff (9 not out) stood firm to play out the final seven and a half overs, adding an unbroken 29 with Greenhalgh hitting an unbeaten 51, his maiden Lancashire League half century.
