Accrington went down to a 4 wicket defeat on the opening day of the season at Colne. New professional Dipak Patel top scored with 50 from 74 balls in Accrington's 187-7. Trevor Kegg removed opener Graham Beech (1) at 3 and Bob Collins was run out for 10 with the score on 22. Skipper Nick Marsh (35) put on 89 with Patel before home professional Robin Singh removed his opposite number at 111 and Marsh ten runs later, both men clean bowled. Three runs later Paul Seedle (1) was run out. Paul Barratt was caught behind by Paul Wilson off Singh (4-52) at 132 and Martin Whittle (14) also fell to the West Indian after adding 36 for the 7th wicket with Mark Greenhalgh who hit an unbeaten 24. Wicketkeeper Mike Wilson was also unbeaten on 5 in an 8th wicket stand of 19 which took Accrington to 187-7. The visitors made a good start with the ball with Greenhalgh having opener Gary Hunt caught by Collins for 1 at 3. Patel removed Daryl Halstead (11) at 17 and skipper David Halliwell (18) at 50 but Singh and Andy Leah put on a match winning 125 for the 4th wicket. Leah hit a senior best 68 from 52 balls before falling to Steve Juliff. Patel removed John Lambert (3) at 182 and Singh with just 2 needed for victory after the home professional had hit 73 from 104 balls leaving Wilson (2 not out) and Peter Little (0 not out) to seal victory with 2 overs to spare.
