Burnley beat Accrington by 16 runs at Turf Moor on the opening day of the season. Consistent batting by Terry Little (30), Duncan Spencer (26), Trevor Pickup (25) and Mark Harvey (21) saw the home side to 163-9 with veteran Ian Birtwistle picking up 4-47. Shane Warne took 2-34 on his league debut dismissing Spencer to claim his first wicket in the Lancashire League. Nick Marsh hit ten boundaries in a fine knock of 70 but only Paul Barratt (28) and Mark Greenhalgh (13) could manage double figures of the remaining batsmen as Accrington finished on 147-8.
