Accrington went out of the cup at the 1st Round stage losing to Todmorden by 6 wickets at Centre Vale. Ian Smith took a career best 7-33 to bowl Accrington out for 124 and help Todmorden gain revenge for last season's defeat in the semi final at the same venue. After openers Nick Marsh (2) and skipper Andy Barker (14) hod put on 40, Smith dismissed both men. Professional Robert Haynes fell to his opposite number Brett Williams for 4 at 46. Billy Rawstron and Paul Barratt (6) took the score to 75 when Smith struck again to send back Barratt. Rawstron fell to Stuart Parker for 32 at 89. One run later Neil Barnes was bowled by Smith for 4. Neil Holmes was stumped by Bobby Brownbridge off Parker without scoring at 93 but Trevor Hatch and Steve Juliff fought back with an 8th wicket stand of 28 before Hatch was bowled by Smith for 23. Juliff also fell to Smith at 124 and Mark Greenhalgh (2) became Smith's seventh victim without addition. Smith's remarkable spell of off spin included six clean bowleds. Haynes removed Williams for 17 at 18 and Juliff sent back John Brierley (5) at 34. Stuart Bailey (13) fell to Ian Birtwistle at 52 and Smith (13) was caught by Greenhalgh off Haynes at 79 leaving Brian Heywood (45 not out) and Mark Clayton (26 not out) to take Todmorden to victory in the 42nd over.
