Accrington 1990
Accrington 1st XI 1990

Accrington went down to a 8 run defeat to a 10 man Ramsbottom team in a low scoring encounter at Acre Bottom. Home professional Steve Monkhouse was unable to bat or bowl due to a back injury. The club had been unable to find a replacement so Monkhouse had to play. Sixteen of the 20 wickets to fall were taken by spinners. Professional Robert Haynes took 6-53 and Steve Juliff 3-38 to dismiss the home side for 113. Rain delayed the start by almost two hours. After losing Ian Bell to Haynes' first ball of the game when the West Indian held a brilliant return catch, Steve Ashworth (15) and Richard Heaton (41) put on 41 for the 2nd wicket. Both also fell to Haynes who also removed skipper Jack Simpson (1), Mark Gowers (6) and Jon Fielding (0). Juliff accounted for the middle order sending back Mark Price (2), Steve Dearden (17) and Brian Taylor (19). Spinners Price and Fielding opened the bowling for Ramsbottom with Price removing Accrington skipper Andy Barker who fell to his first ball without scoring. Fielding sent back Nick Marsh for 12 with Price removing Haynes (17), Neil Barnes (15), Trevor Hatch (3), Paul Barratt (4) and Mark Demaine (12) and Fielding accounting for John Seedle (11) and Mark Greenhalgh who top scored with 24 before being caught on the boundary. Price picked up his 7th and final wicket when he had Juliff caught by Bell for 3 to dismiss Accrington for 105 in the 31st over. Price finished with 7-44 and Fielding took 3-59. Accrington dropped down a place to fourth in the table. Scorecard
