A double header weekend against defending champions and current second placed Haslingden began with a 9 wicket win at Accrington. A fine all round bowling performance saw Haslingden bowled out for 126 in the 42nd over with Steve Juliff taking 3-23, Ian Birtwistle 2-19 and professional Robert Haynes 2-30. Mark Greenhalgh had opener Bob Collins caught behind by a diving Billy Rawstron for 13 with the score on 24. Bryan Knowles was next to go at 40, caught by Juliff at gully off John Seedle also for 13. Five runs later Juliff held a return catch off sixteen year-old Graham Knowles who was dismissed without scoring. Juliff also sent back Stuart Taylor (6) at 54 and Mike Ingham who top scored with 30, including successive sixes off Haynes, at 75. John Entwistle was then run out by Haynes for 17 at 92 and without addition professional Mike Whitney fell to Haynes for 4. Skipper Bob Grimshaw (6) also fell to Haynes at 106 but it was Birtwistle who polished off the Haslingden innings by dismissing Mick Tracey (20) and wicketkeeper Paul Marcroft (0) in successive balls at 126. Accrington openers Nick Marsh and skipper Andy Barker put on 59 before Marsh fell for 30 to Whitney who took a brilliant one handed return catch.
