Accrington 1st XI 1990

Accrington gained revenge for their opening day defeat with a tense 3 run win at Colne to move up the table to fourth place. A fine spell by Steve Juliff, who took 4-13 in his second spell of four overs after conceding 12 runs off his first over. Skipper Andy Barker top scored with 51 from 109 balls, including seven boundaries, adding 75 for the 1st wicket with Nick Marsh (33). Billy Rawstron (5) and professional Robert Haynes (0) both fell at 90 with Barker being run out at 128. Colne professional Hartley Alleyne (2-45) dismissed Paul Barratt (18) and Trevor Hatch (10) with Neil Barnes (1) becoming the second run out victim of the innings. The final over of the innings was crucial with 16 runs coming off Trevor Kegg, Mark Greenhalgh finishing unbeaten on 20 in Accrington's 174-8. Haynes sent back Andy Riley (23) at 48 and Ian Birtwistle had skipper Gary Hunt caught by Marsh for 1 at 67. Birtwistle had Paul Tilbury caught behind by Rawstron for 14 with 95 on the board. With Colne in charge on 143-3 after 39 overs Barker recalled Juliff to the attack. Opener Paul Simmonite was next to go in the 40th over after hitting 77 from 123 balls with eight fours and a six, Juliff holding a return catch. Juliff then dismissed Geoff Marsden (36) who had added 50 with Simmonite. Haynes held return catches off Kegg (5) and Darryl Halstead (1) to leave Colne needing 7 off Juliff's final over for victory. Alleyne took a single off the first ball but Peter Little was caught by Barratt off the second. Alleyne was back on strike but he could only manage a single off the penultimate ball with Kevin Cullen falling to a great catch on the boundary by Barnes off Juliff to give Accrington a 3 run win.
