Accrington slipped to a third successive league and cup defeat as Rishton completed the double over the title contenders with a 2 wicket win on a lively track at Thorneyholme Road in a low scoring encounter. Professional Wayne Daniel took 5-29 and Colin Kuhn 4-65 to dismiss Accrington for 97. Home professional Robert Haynes replied with 5-38 but an unbeaten 34 by Keith Topham took Rishton to a hard fought win. Accrington openers Nick Marsh (15) and Andy Barker (17) put on 35 before Kuhn had Barker caught behind by Frank Martindale. Haynes had made just 2 also falling to Kuhn who then removed Marsh with 3 wickets falling for the addition of just 4 runs. Billy Rawstron became Daniel's first victim at 47 without scoring. The next four batsmen also failed to trouble the scorers. David Lloyd fell to Kuhn with Martindale taking his second catch. Daniel then shot out Neil Barnes, Glyn Davies and Mark Demaine without scoring. Trevor Hatch though stood firm hitting five fours and two sixes before falling to Graham Bardsley. Neil Holmes (6), who had added 19 with Hatch for the 9th wicket, was the last man to fall, caught by Craig Smith off Daniel. Haynes sent back skipper David Wells (2), Phil Sykes (4) John Ainscough (5) and Daniel (0) with Lloyd accounting for Smith (9), Russell Whalley (11) and Bardsley (1) to reduce Rishton to 41-7. Topham and Kuhn fought back with a match winning 8th wicket stand of 54 before Kuhn fell to Haynes for 19 leaving Martindale to stay with Topham to see Rishton to victory. Topham faced 72 balls and hit two boundaries during his innings. Scorecard
