Professional Robert Haynes hit 57 to help second placed Accrington to 2 wicket win over Rawtenstall at Thorneyholme Road. Skipper David Lloyd (4-41) claimed the first wicket when he trapped Peter Wood in front for 17 with the score on 20. Two runs later the other opener Brian Payne fell to Haynes for 5. John Kershaw and Glenn Barlow put on 70 for the 3rd wicket before Kershaw was caught by Mark Greenhalgh off David Parsons for 28. Haynes had his opposite number Anthony Johnson caught by Nick Marsh for 6 and Garry Holder caught by stand-in wicketkeeper Paul Barratt for 1 to have Rawtenstall 108-5 in the 37th over. Brett Storey joined Barlow to add 49 for the 6th wicket before Lloyd had Barlow stumped by Barratt for 53, including six fours. Two runs later Bob Holmes fell to Lloyd without scoring. Storey was next to go after a brisk 32 giving Lloyd his fourth wicket. the Rawtenstall innings closed on 167-8. Johnson had Andy Barker caught by Storey at 3 but Marsh and Haynes put on 101 for the 2nd wicket. Marsh made 41 from 78 balls before being trapped in front by Johnson (4-69). Three runs later Haynes fell to Johnson for a 69 ball 57 which contained eight boundaries. Johnson claimed his 50th wicket of the season when he had Barratt caught by Kershaw for 10 at 122. Two runs later Keith Roscoe accounted for Lloyd (2) with a return catch. Roscoe then had Glyn Davies stumped by Peter Barnes for 4 at 131 and Jim Stevenson caught by Brian Terry at 148. David Parsons was run out without addition to have Accrington on 148-8 in the 42nd over. Youngsters Mark Demaine (13 not out) and Greenhalgh (17 not out from 9 balls ) took charge with a flurry of boundaries to see Accrington to a third successive victory with 2.1 overs to spare.
