Accrington professional Robert Haynes and skipper David Lloyd took 9 wickets between them to bowl their side to the top of the table with a 19 run win at Ramsbottom. The visitors had to make a late changed when Ian Birtwistle pulled out of the match following the sudden death of his father William with Martin Whittle coming in to the team. Accrington openers Nick Marsh and Andy Barker got the innings off to a fine start with a stand of 59. Marsh was first to go bowled by home professional Brian McMillan for 19. Haynes made 17 in a 2nd wicket stand of 38 with Barker before being caught by Mark Gowers off Steve Ratcliffe (2-32). Barker and Lloyd then added 59 before Steve Monkhouse had the visiting skipper caught behind by Jack Simpson for 29. Three runs later Monkhouse (2-50) had Barker caught by Ian Bell for 60, made from 115 balls and containing five fours. Dave Parsons (3), and Billy Rawstron (0) fell cheaply as the overs ran out but Accrington closed on a decent 173-6. Neil Holmes picked up his first wicket of the season when he had Steve Ashworth caught by Neil Barnes for 2 at 17. Bell and McMillan took the score to 60 when Lloyd dismissed the amateur opener for 36. Lloyd also sent back Simpson for 21 at 106 and three runs later Haynes struck for the first time when he had Brian Taylor caught by Rawstron for 1. Steve Hall (0) fell to Lloyd at 112 to give the Accrington skipper his 200th Lancashire League wicket and Mark Gowers (1) was caught by Marsh off Haynes at 131. The West Indian struck again at 141 when he had McMillan caught by Trevor Hatch for 74, including eight fours made off 104 balls. Lloyd then picked up Jon Fielding (4) and Monkhouse (0) with Haynes accounting for Ratcliffe (4) to bowl Ramsbottom out for 154. Lloyd finished with 5-56 and Haynes took 4-66. Scorecard
