New Accrington professional Robert Haynes made a sensational Lancashire League debut taking a career best 8-25 to send reigning champions Haslingden to a 61 run defeat at Bentgate on the opening day of the 1989 season. Captain David Lloyd top scored with 42 in Accrington's 138 all out. Andy Barker was the first man to go when he was trapped in front by Alan Barnes (3-47) for 5 when the score was 10. Haynes made 27, including four fours and a six from just 20 balls before being bowled by spinner Mick Tracey's second ball (3-37). Billy Rawstron had made 3 when he was caught by Haslingden professional Simon O'Donnell off Tracey with 48 on the board. Opener Nick Marsh had battled away for a 33 ball 9 before being caught at slip by Bryan Knowles off O'Donnell one run later. Lloyd and Paul Barratt had put on 45 for the 5th wicket when O'Donnell (4-51) cleaned up Barratt for 12. Dave Parsons was trapped in front by O'Donnell for 2 at 109 and when Lloyd fell without addition to Barnes, Accrington were in trouble at 109-7. Trevor Hatch (4) fell to Tracey at 116 and 3 runs later O'Donnell had Neil Holmes caught behind by Paul Marcroft for 3. Neil Barnes and last man Ian Birtwistle added a vital 19 for the last wicket before Barnes fell to Tracey for 13. Birtwistle finished unbeaten on 5, made from 22 balls. Haynes clean bowled opener Bob Collins for 10 with the score on 17. Birtwistle joined the attack in the 11th over and had Mick Ingham caught by Hatch off his fourth ball without scoring at 23. Ten runs later Haynes picked up the vital wicket of O'Donnell who was superbly caught by Barratt for 6. Stuart Taylor (4) fell to Haynes at 41 and Alan Massicks (1) departed at 45. Opener Bryan Knowles' 91 minute stay ended when he was stumped by Rawstron off Birtwistle for 23 with the score on 49. Skipper Bob Grimshaw was caught by Lloyd off Haynes without scoring to bring Tracey to the wicket at 56-7. Tracey immediately took the attack to Haynes smashing his first ball to the boundary before clubbing a huge six in the West Indian's next over. It didn't last though with Haynes clean bowling Tracey for 12 two balls later. Three runs later Graham Knowles was caught by Hatch at gully after surviving for 30 balls in making 10. Haynes polished off the tail by having Barnes caught by Barker for 2 to dismiss Haslingden for 77. Scorecard
