Accrington's first home match of the season saw David Lloyd's side lose out to Bacup on run rate in a low scoring game. Skipper Lloyd took 6-52 and professional Robert Haynes 4-39 to dismiss Bacup for 123 but Roger Harper took 4-22 from 14 overs to help restrict Accrington to 91-8 after 35 overs. Accrington wicketkeeper Billy Rawstron equalled the league record for most stumpings in an innings, held jointly by William Worsley (1903) and Jimmy Hanson (1933) with six victims. Bacup openers Mark Taylor and David Usher put on 54 before Usher was bowled by Lloyd for 27 in the 19th over. Taylor followed without addition for 20, with Rawstron whipping off the bails, Haynes claiming his first victim of the afternoon. Skipper Peter Thompson fell in the same fashion half an hour later for 6 with the score on 83. Professional Harper and Peter Nicholson put on 20 for the 4th wicket before the wicketkeeper was trapped in front by Haynes for 6. One run later Peter Usher was stumped by Rawstron off Lloyd for a single. Harper's 60 ball innings of 39 ended three runs later when Rawstron again whipped off the bails off Lloyd. Terry Lord made 7 before being caught by Nick Marsh off Lloyd at 115. Nick Cronshaw (5) and David Thompson (0) fell at 121 in the same Lloyd over with Rawstron and Neil Barnes providing the assists. Rawstron's sixth and final stumping ended the innings at 123 with Haynes bagging the wicket of Peter Cook (3). Rain delayed the resumption by 44 minutes leaving Accrington needing 95 off 35 overs. Openers Nick Marsh and Andy Barker added 49 in 17 overs before Marsh was bowled by David Usher for 26 from 59 balls made in exactly one hour. Haynes made just 2 before being stumped by Nicholson off his opposite number Harper at 56. Rawstron's day took a turn for the worse when he fell first ball to Harper with Nick Cronshaw taking the catch. Barker also fell to Harper at 67, caught by David Usher for 27. Skipper Lloyd made 9 from 30 balls before being run out at 73. At this point Accrington needed 22 off one ball less than 5 overs with Paul Barratt and new batsman David Parsons at the crease. The score soon became 75-8 with Harper having Parsons caught by skipper Thompson without scoring and David Usher having both Barnes and Mark Demaine stumped by Nicholson also without scoring. Neil Holmes (4 not out) and Barratt (12 not out) took 10 off Usher's final over but Accrington fell 4 runs short of victory on 91-8. Scorecard
