Ian Birtwistle took a career best 8-63 in Accrington's 5 run defeat at the hands of the defending champions and current league leaders Haslingden at Bentgate. Opener Bob Collins (15) was Birtwistle's first victim at 15. One run later Accrington professional Rod Tucker had Mike Ingham caught by Trevor Hatch for 1. Birtwistle then accounted for Paul Blackledge (14), professional Geoff Lawson (18), Stuart Taylor (21), John Entwistle (11), Alan Massicks (25), Mick Tracey (12) and skipper Bob Grimshaw (10) in Haslingden's 138-9 from a rain reduced 44 overs. Lawson hit back by sending back openers Jim Stevenson (4) at 7 and Nick Marsh (4) at 8 to reach 50 wickets for the season. Andy Gardener (14) helped Tucker take the score to 42 and stand-in skipper Graham Beech made 21 in a 4th wicket stand of 54 with his professional before falling to Lawson who also picked up Hatch (4) at 122. Two runs later Tucker's fine innings of 72 was ended when Tracey held a return catch. The Australian hit five fours and a six from the 92 balls that he faced. Tracey also removed Mark Demaine (0), Mick Donnelly (1) and Paul Barratt (7) but Lawson had the last word dismissing Vernon Woods without scoring to finish with 5-65 as Accrington collapsed from 122-4 to 133 all out. Accrington dropped down to seventh place in the league table. Scorecard
