In the battle of the top two clubs, an outstanding all round performance by professional Tom Moody helped league leaders East Lancs inflict Accrington's first defeat of the season at Thorneyholme Road after the home side had opened the season with four successive wins. Moody took 7-63 to dismiss Accrington for 143, and then the Australian hit an unbeaten century to take East Lancs to a 7 wicket win with almost 18 overs to spare. Accrington openers Graham Beech and Nick Marsh put on 39 before stand-in skipper Beech fell to Moody for 23. Stuart Clemson removed home professional Rod Tucker for 25 with the score on 68. Moody struck again at 88 to end Marsh's innings of 32. Andy barker and Neil Barnes took Accrington passed the 100 mark but both fell at 103 with Barnes being stumped by David Pearson off Paul Greenwood for 5 and Barker (13) being one of three caught and bowled victims for Moody. Three runs later Billy Rawstron became victim number three after having made 2. Martin Whittle fell next ball to give Moody his fifth wicket. Trevor Hatch led a fightback with Paul Barratt, adding 37 for the 8th wicket before being run out for 22. Moody polished off the innings by sending back Glyn Davies and Ian Birtwistle both without scoring in his final over leaving Barratt stranded on 13. Pearson despatched Tucker's opening delivery to the boundary but fell three balls later. Clemson was then run out to have the visitors in trouble at 6-2 but Daryl Redhead (22) helped Moody take the score to 116 before being trapped by Tucker. Moody went on to hit fourteen fours and three sixes in hitting an unbeaten 104 from 93 balls. Andy Compton was also unbeaten on 11 when East Lancs crossed the line. Accrington's defeat saw the club drop down to third place. Scorecard
