A new look Accrington team began the season with a 28 run win over last season's dual runners up Todmorden at Thorneyholme Road on a surprisingly hot sunny day. New opening pair Graham Beech, returning to the club after five seasons at Enfield, and left hander Nick Marsh put on 42 before Marsh was bowled by Mick Hartley for 20. Beech fell to Todmorden professional Fanie de Villiers without addition after having made 19, his stump broken in two in the process. Ian Smith sent back Billy Rawstron (13) at 71 and with 91 on the board Ibra Ali dismissed both Accrington professional Bharathi Arun (24) and Trevor Hatch (10). Neil Jones (22 not out) and Paul Barratt (33 not out) shared an unbroken 6th wicket stand of 57 to take Accrington to 148-5 at the end of 46, 6 ball overs. Ali finished with 2-24. Arun then sent back Todmorden's top three, Albert Ross (1), Richard Eastwood (9) and Ian Smith (23) to have the visitors 43-3. Alan Worsick, who had resumed as captain after a two year break, removed de Villiers (8) at 56 and then Arun picked up his 4th wicket with the help of a Rawstron catch to remove Hartley without scoring. Worsick then turned back the years, knocking over the last five Todmorden batsmen to finish with 6-27, dismissing the visitors for 120. Only David Whitehead, who hit 26 from 52 balls, offered much resistance. Scorecard
