Accrington 181-6, Rishton 185-5
10th May 1987

The visit of Viv Richards drew a huge crowd at Thorneyholme Road who saw a typical unbeaten 98 by the great man take Rishton to a 5 wicket win. Accrington batted first and made 181-6 from 46 overs. Robbie Walsh snapped up the wickets of opener Nick Marsh (8) thanks to a brilliant diving catch in the covers by Richards and Billy Rawstron (0) before Richards removed Graham Beech for 24 in his second over. Paul Barratt faced a scoreless 15 balls before Richards struck again to have the home side in difficulties on 62-4 after 29 overs. Professional Bharathi Arun and David Lloyd then helped themselves to half centuries. Arun earned a collection of £135 for making 72 from 103 balls with eight fours and two sixes, adding 83 for the 5th wicket with Lloyd who picked up £108 for his unbeaten 51 made from 48 balls. Walsh added the late wickets of Arun and Trevor Hatch (2) to finish with 4-66. Richards took 2-41 from 12 overs. Skipper Alan Worsick removed David Wilson (8) with the score on 24. David Ainscough doubled the score with his professional before falling to Arun for 23. Worsick removed Phil Sykes (7), John Winkley (0) and skipper David Wells (22) but John Ainscough hit an unbeaten 15 to help Richards take Rishton to victory with 17 balls remaining. Worsick (4-39) did his best to help Richards leave Thorneyholme Road with his first Lancashire League century but the West Indian fell just short of the ropes after hitting a friendly full toss over long on to finish unbeaten on 98. The gate of £1700 was a record for a Lancashire League match. Scorecard
