Rawtenstall notched an early season double at Thorneyholme Road to send Accrington to a third defeat in five matches. Sound contributions by Glenn Barlow (47), Phillip Pickles (38), professional Peter King (46) and John Kershaw (22) took Rawtenstall to 166-6. Ian Birtwistle claimed the wicket of Barlow after he had put on 82 with Pickles in 27 overs. Peter Wood (1) fell to Tony Gallagher at 90 with Pickles being run out at the same total. Accrington professional Bharathi Arun took the wickets of King and Kershaw in taking 2-51 from 16 overs. Skipper Alan Worsick removed Mark Griffin (1) in the final over. A steady reply saw Accrington lose their first wicket in the 11th over when Graham Beech was caught behind by Peter Barnes off King for 9. Fellow opener Nick Marsh fell to a return catch by Brett Storey two runs later. Arun had made 7 when he became the second victim of the King-Barnes combination. Left arm spinner Keith Roscoe joined the attack and picked up the wicket of Neil Jones in his 4th over for 8. Billy Rawstron and Paul Barratt put on 21 for the 4th wicket before Barratt became Roscoe's second victim for 7. Trevor Hatch became victim number three 6 runs later and when Rawstron fell to Bob Holmes for 32, Accrington were 93-7. Worsick and Tony Gallagher also fell to Holmes without scoring and Roscoe picked up Andy Gardener (7) to finish with 4-33 from 10 overs. Holmes took 3-13 in the home sides innings of 100 all out.
