Accrington's first away match of the season ended in a 4 wicket defeat at Rawtenstall inspite of a century opening stand by Graham Beech and Nick Marsh. Beech was the first to go when he was bowled by Brett Storey for 49 after adding 118 with Marsh. Professional Bharathi Arun fell next ball as Accrington ended the 27th over on 118-2. Two runs later Marsh fell to Bob Holmes for 67, hitting eight fours and three sixes in his maiden half century for the club. Bill Rawstron (0), Trevor Hatch (1), Neil Jones (10) and Paul Barratt (16) all fell in the quest for quick runs. Andy Gardener (13) and skipper Alan Worsick (10) were the not out batsmen when the innings closed on 173-7 after 42 overs. Storey took 4-62 and Holmes 2-26. Worsick removed Phillip Pickles (5) at 12 and when Glenn Barlow (25) and professional Peter King (0) both fell in the 11th over on 49 Accrington were back in the match. John Kershaw (8) added 19 with Peter Wood who fell to Arun (3-82) on 84 after hitting 35. When Ian Birtwistle removed Brian Terry without scoring Accrington were in charge with the home side struggling on 93-6 after 28 overs. A match winning stand of 84 turned the match with Mark Griffin hitting a brilliant unbeaten 70 from 73 balls with good support from Holmes who hit 27 from 36 balls to take Rawtenstall to a 4 wicket win with 9 balls to spare.
