Accrington lost for the fourth time in five matches going down to Rishton by 6 runs at Thorneyholme Road. The visitors made 188-5 with solid knocks all the way down the order following the early loss of David Wilson who was caught by Mark Aspin off John Bramwell without scoring. David Ainscough and Phil Sykes put on 86 for the 2nd wicket before Sykes fell to Ian Birtwistle (2-49) for 34. Professional Winston Davis made a rapid 18 and then Ainscough fell to Accrington professional Rod Tucker for 57, including four fours. Tucker was still feeling the effects of an ankle injury and was bowling off three paces. John Ainscough (35 not out) upped the tempo as the overs ran out, adding 28 with John Winkley (13) and an unbroken 40 for the 7th wicket with wicketkeeper Graham Thomson (18). Graham Lloyd's poor run of form continued on his promotion to open the innings, the youngster falling to Davis for 7. Opening partner Andy Stevenson (11) fell at 25and skipper Trevor Hatch (13) departed at 57. Neil Jones (25) added 55 with Tucker for the 4th wicket. The Accrington professional made 65 from 93 balls with three fours and three sixes before being caught by Sykes off his opposite number Davis at 146. Needing 29 off the final three overs, Mark Aspin (29) and Paul Barratt (18 not out) made useful late runs and Billy Rawstron was unbeaten on 12 but the overs ran out with Accrington finishing on 182-7. Accrington dropped down to third place behind Nelson and Todmorden who share the lead on 57 points from 18 matches. Scorecard
