League leaders Accrington went down to a second successive league defeat on the ground where they had recorded a massive 135 run win in the Worsley Cup just six days previously. The plan to ask Rawtenstall to bat backfired as the home side piled up 223-6. Professional Rod Tucker (3-81) removed opener Glenn Barlow (3) at 6 and Alan Worsick (3-55) had Mark Griffin caught behind by Billy Rawstron for 30. Worsick struck again 2 runs later at 44 when he held a return catch off John Kershaw. This brought professional Tony Merrick and skipper Peter Wood together and the pair added 99 for the 4th wicket before Worsick dismissed the amateur for 52 made from 96 balls and containing four fours and two sixes. Two runs later Merrick fell to his opposite number Tucker for a 57 ball 53 that included four huge sixes and two fours. Neil Chadwick (37 not out) and Jonathan Benn (30 not out) plundered some late runs, adding an unbroken 63 for the 7th wicket to set the visitors a daunting target. Openers Andy Gardener (12) and Andy Stevenson (19) put on 29 before Merrick removed them both along with Graham Lloyd (5). Tucker (30) and Nei Jones (33) added 53 for the 4th wicket but both fell to Keith Roscoe (3-68), Tucker being superbly caught by Bob Holmes at cover. Wood picked up the wicket of Mark Aspin (11) but a 7th wicket stand of 46 between Paul Barratt (19) and skipper Trevor Hatch took the score to 160. Hatch fell at 192 after hitting 51 from 44 balls with two fours and three sixes and Worsick (5) fell at the same score to give Merrick (5-75) his fifth wicket. Roscoe clinched victory when he had last man Ian Birtwistle stumped by Brian Manning and Accrington were all out for 199. The win was Rawtenstall's first in eight matches and meant that Accrington dropped down to second place 4 points behind leaders Nelson. Scorecard
