Accrington began the season with a home defeat on run rate to Ramsbottom in a match that began just before 3pm. Neil Jones top scored with 32, made from 45 balls and including three fours and a six before falling to Mark Price (3-24). Sub professional Mike Watkinson removed Graham Lloyd for 5 and new Accrington professional Rod Tucker for 16. In between skipper Brian Fielding sent back opener Billy Rawstron for 2. Jones fell at 58 and skipper Trevor Hatch became Price's next victim at 83 after hitting two sixes in his innings of 24. Price accounted for Alan Worsick (5) at 92 with the innings ending on 111-6 after 37 overs. Mark Aspin (14) and Andy Stevenson (11) were the not out batsmen. Rain reduced Ramsbottom's target to 103 from 34 overs. Openers Ian Bell (13) and Steve Hall (34) put on 43 before Bell was caught behind by Rawstron off Worsick. Hall became Ian Birtwistle's first victim of the season at 57 when he was stumped by Rawstron but Steve Ashworth (33 not out) and Watkinson (18 not out) saw the visitors home. Worsick's 13 overs yielded just 19 runs. The match finished in unusual circumstances. Ramsbottom scored the winning runs and the players began to leave the field only to return in order to bowl the final 11 balls to allow Accrington the opportunity to take the bowling point.
