Accrington notched up a third successive win by beating local rivals Church by 7 wickets at West End. The match began five minutes late because one of the umpires failed to turn up so Church Chairman Tony Marsden stood in for the first over. Local umpire Brian Rutter, who had come to watch the match took over for the remainder of the game. Tight bowling by professional Rod Tucker (3-19 from 13 overs), Mark Aspin (3-23 from 11), Alan Worsick (2-31 from 12) and Ian Birtwistle (0-18 from 10 overs) restricted the home side to 96-8 from their full allocation of 46 overs. Tucker sent back openers Martin Heyes (9) and Dave Gilrane (8) at 17 with Worsick picking up Ken Fergusson (1) at 25. Ian Osborne made a joint top score of 20 before being caught by Geoff Hayhurst off Aspin at 46. Aspin had skipper Steve Metcalf caught by his opposite number Trevor Hatch for 2 and then professional John Maguire was caught behind by Billy Rawstron for 13 off the same bowler. Alan Rawcliffe and Tommy George dug in to grind out 19 runs in 9 overs before George fell to Worsick for an untypical 3 made from 24 balls. Tucker ended Rawcliffe's innings on 20 with David Horne (6 not out) and Nick Westwell (8 not out) picking up some late runs to take the home side to 96-8. Maguire struck first to send back Rawstron for 2 with the score on 6 in the 9th over and then the veteran Jack Houldsworth cleaned up Aspin for 12 with the score on 18 in the 16th over. Graham Lloyd and Tucker then took charge, adding 73 before Lloyd fell to Maguire for 47, made in 113 balls. Tucker took just 2 more balls to hit the required runs to win the match to finish unbeaten on 33. Dropped catches cost Accrington the bowling point and as a result Nelson opened up a 1 point lead at the top of the table. Scorecard
