Accrington 114-7, Todmorden 125-5 (Todmorden won by 1 run on faster scoring rate. Target: 115 from 34 overs)
After three successive No Results, Accrington found themselves on the wrong end of a nail-biting finish against Todmorden at Thorneyholme Road. Todmorden professional Darryl Scott top scored with 65 in his sides 125-5 made from 37 overs. Scott faced 105 balls and was rewarded with a collection of £9.50. After losing Albert Ross at 2 and Ian Smith at 11, Scott and Stuart Priestley put on 95 for the 3rd wicket. Priestley faced 70 balls in making 35 before being caught behind by Billy Rawstron off Mark Aspin for 33. Aspin also claimed the wicket of Mick Hartley for 8 in taking 3-51 from 13 overs, Accrington's sole wicket-taker with Scott being run out. Scott ripped out Rawstron before a run had been scored in Accrington's reply. It was heavy going for the Lloyds with professional David falling for 13 in the 11th over with the score on 27. Andy Stevenson (1) fell to Smith 1 run later. Neil Jones (6) helped Graham Lloyd take the score to 41 before being taken behind by David Whitehead off Scott. Four runs later Lloyd fell for a laboured 23 made from 61 balls to have Accrington in dire trouble at 45-5. Paul Barratt and Andy Gardener pulled the innings round with a stand of 30 before Gardener tried one quick single too many and was run out for 14. Skipper Trevor Hatch was bowled by Smith without addition to bring Alan Worsick to the crease. Further rain had reduced Accrington's target to 115 from 34 overs but only four and a half overs remained to hit the 40 runs needed. Eight came from Scott's next over and 10 from Smith's over. Seven were scrambled from the penultimate over to leave 14 required from the final six balls to be bowled by off spinner Smith. A single to Barratt off the second ball brought Worsick on strike with 13 needed from just 4 balls. Twos from each of the next three balls meant it was Mission Impossible off the final ball but Worsick managed to hit it high for six to leave Todmorden the winners by just 1 run. Barratt finished on 26 and Worsick on 27 from 15 balls with Scott (3-49) and Smith (3-50) taking 3 wickets apiece for the visitors. The win took Todmorden up to second place 8 points behind Haslingden with Accrington staying in fourth place. Scorecard If you have any memories of 1985 please email Nigel Stockley
