Accrington opened the season with a nail biting 1 run win over defending champions East Lancs at Alexandra Meadows. Openers Billy Rawstron and Andy Stevenson put on 42 before Stevenson was caught behind by David Pearson off professional Cyril Mitchley for 25. Accrington professional David Lloyd made 41 in helping Rawstron take the score to 127 before he became the first of five victims for John Seedle (5-60). Mitchley cleaned up skipper Trevor Hatch for 2 and Seedle had Rawstron caught by veteran Brian Bowling for a fine 60 made from 122 balls and containing three boundaries. Neil Jones hit a swift 20 from 19 balls as Seedle picked up three wickets in the last over in the chase for late runs. Mark Aspin finished unbeaten on 5 as Accrington closed on 158-7. Alan Worsick quickly disposed of Pearson (1), skipper Wayne Cooper (0) and Graham Tattersall (11) to reduce the home side to 15-3. Neil Clemson (27) and Derek Hollinrake put on 70 with Hollinrake hitting 53 from just 34 balls with seven fours and two sixes before falling to Ian Birtwistle (3-38). Mitchley (16) and Clemson added another 30 before both men fell to Birtwistle within 5 runs of each other. Lloyd bowled Seedle for 16 at 138 but John Wharton and Howard Bowling took the score to 154. With just 5 runs needed from two overs with 3 wickets in hand the home side were firm favourites but Worsick had other ideas removing both Wharton (14) and Ian Haworth (0) in conceding 1 run. Lloyd kept up the pressure as East Lancs crumbled. Brian Bowling was run out off the final ball to leave Accrington the winners by just 1 run. Scorecard
