David Lloyd’s first match for Accrington in 19 years ended with a 23 run win at Todmorden in the opening match of the 1984 season.  Lloyd opened the innings himself, making 34 from 65 balls before being run out in the 18th over with the score on 48-4. The former Lancashire skipper was the second run out victim of the innings after Peter West who fell victim to a mix up when Lloyd called for a single off the sixth ball of the first over before a run had been scored and before his luckless partner had even faced a ball. Todmorden professional Rod Estwick trapped Neil Jones lbw for 2 and then he had Malcolm Taylor caught behind by David Whitehead for 8 with the score on 37. Mark Aspin rallied the innings in the second half, making 42 in, adding 30 with Trevor Hatch (17) and 44 with Andy Gardener who made an unbeaten 29 which was his best senior score to date as the innings closed on 152-6 after 34 eight ball overs.  Accrington skipper Alan Worsick sprung a surprise by opening the bowling with himself and Aspin who had only ever bowled just one single delivery at senior level.  Worsick (2-28) removed Jim Clayton (5) at 31 and Stuart Priestley (9) at 47. Brian Heywood and Ian Smith took the score to 103 when the latter was caught by Taylor off Ian Birtwistle for 67 off 110 balls in the 27th over. Three runs later Estwick was stumped by Paul Barratt off Birtwistle for 2 and then Lloyd picked up his first wicket as Accrington professional when he took a return catch to dismiss Heywood for 20. Mike Hartley was next to go caught by Aspin off Birtwistle for 5 and with time running out panic set in. Both John Brierley and David Whitehead were run out and when Lloyd bowled  Alan Fiddling without scoring victory was assured. Mark Clayton and skipper Terry Makin batted out the final three overs to take the score to 129-9 and deny Accrington the bonus point. Scorecard
