David Lloyd’s first home match as Accrington professional ended in a 51 run defeat to Lowerhouse. After the early loss of Brian Higgin to Accrington skipper Alan Worsick for 5, solid knocks by professional Kirti Azad (38), Pankaj Tripathi (36), Phil Astin (27), Brian Holmes (19), Stan Heaton (16) and John Bushell (15) took Lowerhouse to an imposing 184-8 from their 34 eight ball overs on a rock hard pitch. Ian Birtwistle was Accrington’s most successful bowler in terms of wickets taken but his eight overs cost 68 runs in picking up four victims. Billy Rawstron claimed three victims behind the wickets. Lloyd took 2-47 from 12 overs. Opening the batting against Roger Bromley and Stan Heaton, Accrington openers Lloyd and Peter West put on 36 in 10 overs before Heaton had the amateur caught by Jez Hope for 18. Heaton followed up by cleaning up Rawstron for 6 en route to career best figures of 2-50. Heaton would take only one more senior wicket in his next spell against Rishton four months later and would never bowl again at first team level. Lloyd was next out at 81 in the 23rd over after having made 41 from 101 balls. Journalist David Swann wrote in the local paper: ‘The most disappointing aspect was The Bumbles failure to sting.’ Neil Jones (22) and Mark Aspin (18) took the score to 113 but both fell to Roger Bromley (3-36) who also removed Malcolm Taylor (0) in taking three wickets in four balls in the 28th over. Accrington crawled on to finish on 133-7. Scorecard
