Accrington 121-9, Burnley 122-8
Accrington’s batsmen failed again in a 2 wicket defeat to Burnley at Thorneyholme Road. A late rally led by Paul Barratt took Accrington to 69-8 to 121-9 in a dour struggle against Burnley’s four man attack of professional Mudassar Nazar (1-36), Paul Spencer (2-26), Bob Whitaker (3-27) and Tony Townend (3-19). It was Spencer who struck the decisive first blow by dismissing home professional David Lloyd for 3 with the total on 4. Spencer then sent back the other opener Andy Stevenson (7) at 14. Mark Aspin and Malcolm Taylor staged a mini revival taking the score to 43 when Taylor fell to Whitaker for 8. Trevor Hatch (5) became Townend’s first victim in his second over and the medium pacer added Andy Gardener (1) in his next over with Aspin following to the first ball of his fourth over for 30. At this stage Accrington were 61-6 with Townend’s figures 3-7. One run later Mark Stevenson fell to Whitaker for 1 and then Graham Lloyd fell to Whitaker without scoring at 69. Glen Dickinson and Barratt then got their heads down with the former making 7 in 46 balls before falling to Mudassar in the final over. Barratt hit an unbeaten 46 in a 9th wicket stand of 52 made in 11 overs to give his side something to bowl at. Accrington got just the start they needed when Aspin had Mudassar caught by Barratt for 3 with 7 on the board. Trevor Pickup and Peter Brown took the score to 28 when Aspin struck again to end Brown’s innings on 13. Paul Killian (4) became Trevor Hatch’s 100th Lancashire League wicket at 41 and then Ian Birtwistle had Chris Wright (7) taken by wicketkeeper Barratt at 56. Roland Harrison, then joined Pickup in a match winning 5th wicket stand of 45. Harrison made 33 from 45 balls before becoming David Lloyd’s sole victim. Pickup’s long innings ended two runs later at 103. The opener made 32 from 97 balls before Aspin claimed his wicket. Aspin followed up by dismissing Neil Anderson (8) and Spencer (5) to end with figures of 5-26 but Whitaker and Townend saw Burnley home with 5 overs in hand.
