Alan Richardson's first half century of the season helped Accrington to a 3 wicket win over Rawtenstall at Thorneyholme Road.

The left hander hit an unbeaten 51 with five fours and a six in an unbroken match winning stand of 31 with Ian Birtwistle (10 not out) after the home side had looked set for defeat on 106-6, chasing Rawtenstall's 136-6.

Peter Wood top scored with 51, adding 49 for the 2nd wicket with Brian Payne (27). Alan Kennedy dismissed both men in taking 3-38 and then professional Alan Worsick removed his opposite number Abid Ali with a casual left handed return catch before the Indian had scored as the visitors lost 3 wickets for the addition of 2 runs. Graham Lord (18), Brian Terry (18 not out) and Brian Manning (14 not out) fought back to set a competitive target.

Accrington got off to good start with openers Graham Beech (10) and John Swanney (28) putting on 39 but Abid Ali (3-45) and Peter Riding (2-38) took 2 wickets apiece as 4 wickets fell for the addition of just 1 run to have the home side struggling on 40-4.

Worsick (23) and Richardson fought back with a 5th wicket stand of 49 before Abid Ali removed Worsick and John Beaumont put the game back in the melting pot by sending back Kennedy and Dave Parsons.

Twenty nine runs were needed from the last 2 overs, the first of which was bowled by Abid Ali whose previous 16 overs had gone for just 25 runs. Richardson laid into the Indian as 20 came off the penultimate over leaving 9 off the last 8 balls to win.

It only took 5 balls for Birtwistle and Richardson to win the match. The left hander earned a collection of £20.54 for his efforts. Scorecard
