A third unbeaten half century on the bounce by Graham Beech couldn't take Accrington to victory at Thorneyholme Road. The opener made an unbeaten 70 in his sides 131 all out in reply to East Lancs 144-9.

Ian Birtwistle picked up 5-25 and professional Alan Worsick took 3-61 with Brian Ratcliffe making 58 for the home side.

Solid knocks from Derek Hollinrake (29) and professional Alan Border who made 28 before falling to Jim Heyburn took East Lancs to a match winning total.

The score would have been much higher but for Birtwistle who ran through the lower order as East Lancs collapsed from 127-3 to 144-9.

Beech and Peter West (19) put on 45 after John Swanney had fallen to Border and the future Australian captain struck again when he made West his 50th wicket of the season.

Border (5-55) and Paul Gill (5-47) shared the wickets as Accrington slumped to 90-8. Late resistance from Paul Graham (12) and Heyburn (7) who added 28 for the last wicket gave the home side hope but the visitors had the last word.

Beech's end of season flourish saw the opener hit an amazing 199 runs without being dismissed in nine days. Scorecard
