A ten point weekend saw Accrington close the gap at the top of the table to just 1 point on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd August. On Saturday Accrington picked up 5 points after beating Rishton by 5 wickets at Thorneyholme Road. Professional Aftab Baloch (34) and Eric Whalley (32) took Rishton to a promising 71-1 but Tony Gallagher (3-23) picked up Whalley and Alan Worsick (4-61) removed Baloch as Rishton were bowled out for 134 in the last over of the innings. Peter West (39), Alan Richardson (22), Worsick (20 not out), Malcolm Taylor (16) and Geoff Hayhurst (16) then all combined to see Accrington to victory with 3 overs remaining.
