League champions Accrington began the season with a 3 wicket win over Colne at Thorneyholme Road. Professional Alan Worsick (3-49) and Tony Gallagher (3-38) took 3 wickets apiece as the champions restricted Colne to 149-9. Professional Afzal Ahmed top scored with 47 and Peter Lane hit 36 for the visitors. Geoff Hayhurst laid the foundations of Accrington's victory with a well constructed 55. Ahmed took 6-60 to make life uncomfortable for the home side. John Swanney hit 36 but it took a late stand between skipper Ian Birtwistle (21 not out) and Gallagher (24 not out) to see the champions past the winning post.
