Accrington v Todmorden
Saturday August 2nd
1975
Accrington
hung on to the coattails of leaders Burnley with an indifferent performance
in beating Todmorden by 4 wickets at Thorneyholme Road. Professional
Alan Worsick snapped up 4 early wickets to reduce the visitors to 43-5
but veterans Peter Brownbridge and stand in skipper Brian Whittaker
put on 51 for the 6th wicket before Brownbridge was well caught by Malcolm
Taylor over his head at mid wicket for 18 to give Worsick (5-43) his
5th wicket. Whittaker went on to show how dangerous he can be by finishing
unbeaten on 88, with seven fours and four sixes, as the visitors closed
on 149-6. Sloppy fielding which at one point descended into the realms
of the farcical when a dropped boundary catch by John Swanney resulted
in overthrows from wild returns on both sides of the wicket and a strange
decision by Peter West to give Alan Richardson his one and only of the
season, gave the visitors an unexpected chance. Whittaker seized the
chance to hammer 24 off the final over of the innings after Todmorden
were struggling on 106-6 with just 2 overs left. West and Richardson
soon made amends with the skipper hitting 40 and Richardson top scoring
on 41 after Geoff Hayhurst had been run out for 26 as Accrington got
off to a solid start. Wickets began to tumble though with Bob Whittaker
removing both West and Richardson with Brian Whittaker getting rid of
Worsick (1) and Malcolm Taylor (0). Swanney also fell to the left arm
spin of Bob Whittaker for a second successive duck before Paul Graham
(13 not out) took three boundaries off Brian Whittakers' eighth over
to win the match.
