Lancashire
League
Accrington v Rishton
Saturday August 16th
1975
A
seventh successive win kept Accrington in top spot after the league
leaders beat Rishton by 3 wickets in a low scoring match at a wet Thorneyholme
Road. The recent rain made for a damp pitch which the home side were
quick to exploit after putting Rishton in to bat with the threat of
more rain around under grey skies. Dave Parsons bowled a superb opening
spell, conceding just six runs off eight overs to put the visitors under
more pressure. Parsons removed Bernard Smith for 14 and Eric Whalley
became the first of three run outs in the Rishton innings. Professional
Aftab Baloch, on a record breaking run of eight successive fifties,
became the second run out victim for 33. Ian Birtwistle removed David
Chew and David Wells and Alan Worsick ran through the tail to finish
with 3-48 after Tony Gallagher had John Ainscough caught by Alan Richardson
for 15. A mix up saw skipper Barrie Hill run out for 18 to give Accrington
a vital bonus point and set the leaders a target of 99 for victory.
The target looked a massive one after Accrington's first 4 wickets fell
for just 10 runs after the roller had brought the moisture back up to
the surface at the tea interval. Ron Smith (4-45) had a field day taking
three of the wickets to fall with only Richardson standing firm. The
left hander put on 63 for the 5th wicket with Worsick, who began opening
his shoulders to put Accrington within sight of victory. When the professional
fell to Peter Whelan without offering a stroke for a hard hit 43, 26
were still needed with 5 wickets in hand. Whelan also removed Richardson
for 27 and Ron Smith had Alan Kennedy caught behind by Whalley for 3
but Birtwistle and Gallagher saw Accrington home with 7 overs to spare.
