Accrington
chalked up a ninth successive victory, overcoming defending champions
Ramsbottom by 2 wickets in a tense low scoring match that went to the
wire. Alan Worsick took 6-26 as Ramsbottom were bowled out for 108 on
a lively wicket. Worsick took his wicket tally for the weekend to 13
and 84 for the season, beating his previous best of 83 in 1970 when
he was an amateur at the club. Dave Parsons made the breakthrough by
bowling Bob Brooks for 5 and then removing Denis Hardman for 21. Ian
Birtwistle bowled Steve Mills for 23 and then Worsick took the vital
wicket of Wasim Raja for 10 as the visitors struggled. Accrington's
early order didn't fare much better with Terry Stewart and Brian Fielding
also finding plenty of life in the wicket. Geoff Hayhurst (16), Peter
West (10) and Malcolm Taylor edged the score along but after Worsick
lost his leg stump to Fielding at 63-5 the game was in the melting pot.
Hero of the hour was Alan Richardson who took everything that Fielding,
Stewart and Raja could offer to play a match winning innings. Fielding
had Alan Kennedy and Ian Birtwistle caught by Raja in the gully off
short balls and when Tony Gallagher was hit by one short ball too many
the umpire stepped in to warn Fielding and skipper Maurice Haslam. Undeterred
Richardson was unmoved and he ended this bad tempered match in the best
possible way by hooking Fielding for six to leave Accrington 7 points
in front of Burnley with five matches left to play.
